Description

We invite you to visit the Maritime Museum of Mallorca, a place that has been transforming its halls in collaboration with the resident artist SOMA. One of the reasons SOMA has been invited is because they have captured the outcry that has been made for years in the maritime neighborhoods of the islands, and now they have graffitied the museum walls with this theme.

The works created by SOMA represent the maritime community of the island and its struggles. It is a way to preserve these stories that are being lost as the buildings where the works were housed are sold and converted into other types of establishments such as houses, hotels, or restaurants. When the artwork is no longer physically present, the opportunity to share the narrative that questions and makes us reflect is also lost.

Why has SOMA found a place at the Maritime Museum of Mallorca?

Because this museum aims to experiment with new languages and forms of artistic expression. When living art engages in a dialogue with heritage, themes such as sustainability, migration, and globalization resonate intensely. Each artwork is a cry that reminds us that, as islands, our existence and well-being depend on the health of our waters.

Spoiler: one of the walls features an image of a llamàntol-siurell, a creature created by SOMA, escaping from a net full of plastics. On the other side, we see fishermen catching llampugues de llengües. This scene captivates attention and makes us reflect on the marine environment and the importance of protecting it.

Do not hesitate to visit the Maritime Museum of Mallorca and explore this fascinating exhibition created by SOMA. It is an opportunity to experience an innovative way of connecting with maritime culture and understanding its implications in the contemporary world.
